Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Builds New State-of-the-Art Plant

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Co. has operated its cast iron foundry at its current location at the corner of S. Clarkson St. and W. Summit Ave. in Charlotte for more than 100 years. Over the decades, the company has invested heavily in capital equipment, environmental control technology, infrastructure and its people in order to operate an efficient, modern and safe foundry.

However, after long and careful consideration, the Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interest of the company to build a new, state-of-the-art foundry on a 428-acre property in Oakboro, North Carolina.

“Charlotte Pipe has always been committed to investments that will benefit our associates, our customers and our shareholders,” said Roddey Dowd Jr., CEO of Charlotte Pipe. “While our current location is providing all stake-holders with a solid platform to deliver outstanding results, a new foundry will allow a more efficient layout of our plant and equipment and give us the fl exibility to expand to meet future needs. Our current site simply does not afford the opportunities for growth that we envision for Charlotte Pipe.”

As plant relocation details are finalized, senior management is evaluating a wide variety of options related to the 55 acres that comprise the current foundry location in uptown Charlotte. “We feel fortunate that the land area constitutes one of the largest contiguous tracts of land in an urban center in the nation and we see many exciting possibilities for the property,” said Hooper Hardison, president of Charlotte Pipe.

Charlotte Pipe worked through an exhaustive, two-year process to select Stanly County as the site for the new foundry, in which the company will invest at least $325 million. The company is currently finishing the design and engineering work and finalizing key contracts and permit applications. Site work could begin later this year and the new plant could be operating as early as the third quarter of 2023.

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry would like to recognize the efforts of the state of North Carolina and its various entities, including the Golden Leaf Foundation and the North Carolina Railroad, which are helping provide infrastructure and other support in an effort to make this project a reality. Specifically, the company would like to thank the following elected officials: Gov. Roy Cooper, Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, Speaker of the House Tim Moore, Sen. Tom McInnis from District 25, Sen. Carl Ford from District 33, Sen. Paul Newton in District 36 and Rep. Wayne Sasser from District 67.

The company is particularly grateful to the Stanly County Board of County Commissioners and the Stanly County Economic Development Commission for their support, as well as the Stanly County Manager who has worked, and continues to work, hand-in-glove with Charlotte Pipe to facilitate this project. The company would also like to thank the town of Oakboro, its mayor and the Town of Oakboro Board of Commissioners for their splendid cooperation.

Charlotte Pipe and Foundry is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and has seven plant locations across the United States. The nation’s leading maker of cast iron and plastic pipe and fittings for plumbing applications, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry has been in continuous operation since 1901 and remains privately held.

New Energy-Saving Filters Feature E-Pleat Media Tech

Parker HVAC Filtration, a division of Parker Hannifi n Corp., introduces two new energy-saving filter products for commercial HVAC use: Parker Load-TECH 4" and 12” filters. Both filters are MERV 14-rated for high effi ciency and feature exclusive gold synthetic media with an embossed design to capture dust at a higher capacity than similar models on the market.

The advanced filter systems utilize Parker’s proprietary E-pleat technology, which molds filtration media into a series of pre-formed channels that direct the air smoothly through the filter, allowing for even loading, minimum resistance, and complete media utilization. The advanced media used in the filters also resists tearing, damage, moisture and microbial growth contributing to long filter life and fewer filter changeouts over time.

Parker LoadTECH 4” and 12” filters are ideal for variable air volume systems across a variety of markets including hotels and entertainment complexes, food processing, microelectronics manufacturing, data centers, commercial office buildings, schools and universities, clean manufacturing facilities, hospitals and healthcare facilities, government institutions and industrial manufacturing. Both the 4" and 12" filters feature a rugged, high-impact polystyrene frame that resists cracking.

Additional benefits include:

  • Low pressure drop for optimal energy savings
  • Lightweight construction for easy handling
  • Interchangeable width and height dimensions; filters can be installed with pleats oriented vertically or horizontally
  • Rated face velocity of 500 FPM
  • Maximum operating temperature of 170°F (77°C)
  • Classified per UL 900 for flammability

Uponor Distribution Center Powered By Wind Energy

In conjunction with Earth Day 2020, Uponor North America announced that its Lakeville, Minnesota, distribution center now receives 100% of its electrical power from wind energy, and is the first major manufacturing customer to participate in Dakota Electric Association’s Wellspring Renewable Energy program.

Wellspring Renewable Energy subscribers pay a slight premium to purchase wind energy sold in 100 kilowatt-hour blocks. As a partner in the program since Jan. 1, 2020, Uponor will annually purchase approximately 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of wind-generated electricity, which is equivalent to powering 263 homes’ electricity use for one year.

Since 2017, Uponor has worked with local utilities to purchase renewable energy blocks, increasing its renewable energy consumption in North America to 36% of its total energy use. Globally, Uponor continues to work toward its commitment of achieving 100% renewable resources to power its facilities by 2025.
